Quotes by…God

Atypical Guy wrote about these bible quotes along with the introduction by the editor – pretty good stuff.  These are both short & quick reads: the Introduction and the Scary Bible Quotes

A preview of the introduction:

All of the hostile messages I have received about Scary Bible Quotes appear to be from Christians. If you genuinely believe the Bible is the word of God, you should be happy, not angry, that I am helping to spread the word of God. If, on the other hand, you think that my page is anti-Christian, then that seems to me a tacit admission that some of the statements in the Bible are so difficult to believe that merely reproducing a collection of them serves to undermine Christianity.

According to polls conducted in 2004, 82% of Americans believe that the Bible is the word of God,(2) and 55% believe that “every word of the Bible is literally accurate.”(3) But it seems to me unlikely that 55% of the country believe all of the assertions quoted on the Scary Bible Quotes page. So I think many people must be unaware of what the Bible actually says. (It’s understandable – who has time for reading books these days?) It seems to me that a look at these quotations would provide valuable evidence relevant to whether the Bible is in fact the word of God and whether every statement in it is literally true.

And why is that important?

For one thing, because people often try to use the Bible to answer such important questions as whether abortion is wrong, whether homosexuality is wrong, and whether humans evolved from apes. Before we rely on the Bible in this way, we need to assess whether it is actually the word of God, and how accurate it is in general.

Presidential Spending & National Debt

Something to keep in mind as we clean up the mess:

“using inflation-adjusted dollars, in the past 28 years, the national debt has risen $800 billion during Democratic administrations, and a whopping $7.5 trillion during Republican administrations.

Or, looked at another way, it’s risen $100 billion a year during Democratic presidencies and $375 billion during Republican administrations. In the Cheney-Bush administration, it has averaged $500 billion a year.”
GOP Rides a Tall Stack of $20s, by Meteor Blades (2009)

All this must come as a shock to the overwhelming majority of Americans who believe that Democrats are spenders and Republicans want to cut government spending. The simple fact is that during the past 34 years, government spending has grown significantly faster when a Republican has sat in the White House.

Banks Outraged Over On Time Payments

Credit Card issuers to customers who aren’t late on their payments: You are free-riding bandits!

That’s the message coming from the credit card lobbyists.  They’ve set up agreements with customers and are now crying “foul” when you don’t have to pay late fees and over-the-limit fees.  Paying on time?  We’re coming after you!

“Those that manage their credit well will in some degree subsidize those that have credit problems.” said Edward L. Yingling, the chief executive of the American Bankers Association, which has been lobbying Congress for more lenient legislation on behalf of the nation’s biggest banks.

People who routinely pay off their credit card balances have been enjoying the equivalent of a free ride, said David Robertson, publisher of the Nilson Report, which tracks the credit card business.  “Despite all the terrible things that have been said, you’re making out like a bandit,” he said.

If you’re losing money on people who have credit problems, here’s an idea: Stop extending them so much credit.  We on the left side of the political spectrum are tired of mega-businesses crying for welfare over their own failing businesses.  You’ve got one hand out taking my tax dollars and with the other, you’re reaching out to me directly.  I guess you’re not suggesting you “pull yourself up by your own bootstraps”?    (more…)

Tom Henning Blows Calls

Referee Tom Henning gave the game to Barcelona.  I’m not sure if he got paid well or if he suffered a debilitating blow to the head earlier in the week,  but…that was terrible attention in the box.  In the 81st minute there was CLEARLY a hand ball in the box.  Even a child could see it.  As my young son said – “Even a hippo would know that was a handball!”.  In the 78th, Yaya Toure used his left arm to grab Anelka’s right arm, twisting him off the ball.  As Anelka shoook his arm free, Yaya Toure gave him a push.  Again, all of this is well inside the box.  And these two calls were within 3 minutes of each other!  In the 23rd minute, Dani Alves fouled Malouda and while Henning did manage to make the call, he called it outside the box when it was clearly inside the box.

Henning’s lack of attention to the penalty box is a disgrace.  The worst call by far was the hand ball in the 81st.

In May of 2007, UEFA president Michael Platini supported adding refs at each end:

‘I propose two more referees, who would be over 45 and would not have to run because they would stay next to the goals,’ the former France playmaker said.  ‘We have to show the world that we’re against unfairness and want to move towards fewer errors.’  Platini said he was against the use of electronic devices and video to assist referees.

Secessionists, Conservatives, Republicans

Republican Governor Rick Perry talks of Texas secession.  Republican Governor Sarah Palin gives key-note and introductory speeches to Alaska’s secessionist party (AIP), as recently as 2008.  Todd Palin was an active member of the AIP for nearly a decade.  Why do these America-bashing conservative leaders publiwant to disintegrate the United States of America?  If you hate America, don’t let the door hit you on the way out, Jack.

They’re bashing America, Toby – where are you?  No stomach for it anymore?  Taking on a blonde girl in a band is about as much as you can handle?
